Overview

St. Stephens College is the pride of Uzhavoor. It was started in 1964 as a junior college with four batches of Pre- Degree students with Mathematics as a core subject of one of the programmes. The B.Sc degree course in Mathematics started in 1968 when the College upgraded to the degree level. In the last fifty years of its existence, the Department has been managed by eminent academicians.
Assignments are given to the students regularly by each teacher, and necessary corrections are made. Students are asked to conduct seminars on given topics as well. Every year a post-admission test is conducted for fresh Mathematics students. A bridge-course/remedial-course is arranged for those students who are poor in Mathematics. The post-admission test results are considered for preparing the input-output statement at the end of the course. An awareness program on basic mathematics is also arranged for non-mathematics graduate students of this College. The Department maintains a very high percentage of results in the university examinations. Around 1000 students passed out from 1968-2020 in BSc Mathematics from this College.

National Maths Fest

The National Mathematics Fest held on 02 to 09, May 2024 at St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, aimed to celebrate the wonders of mathematics, promote interest and understanding in the subject, and foster a sense of appreciation among students, educators, and the general public. The Department of Mathematics, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, and Yesareem Solitions jointly organized the event. As a part of the fest, we conducted a camp for the school students and an exhibition for the public. Also, with the support of D.C. Book publishers, we arranged a book fest for the public. The event brought together mathematicians, educators, students, and enthusiasts to participate in various activities, exhibits, and interactive sessions.

National Graph Theory Day: June 10

As a part of the day observation, the Department of Mathematics conducted a talk on “Graph Theory in Day-to-Day Life” for the students and faculties. Dr. John Joy, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor lead the session. The session started with the brief history of development of graph theory followed by the domination concepts and its applications in communication and security problems.

Pi-Approximation Day Celebration

Pi Approximation Day celebrates the mathematical constant ?, with the date chosen as July 22nd, representing the fraction 22/7 approximating ?. Pi Approximation Day is a celebration of a mathematical constant and an opportunity to engage people of all ages in the wonders of mathematics through fun and educational activities. As a part of the day\'s observation, the Department of Mathematics made a selfie point of Pi in college, and a banyan tree sapling was placed. Also, the department conducted an orientation program regarding the importance of Mathematics in day to day life as well as a Quiz competition for the students of G. H. S. S. Puthuveli.

Farmer’s Day Observation

As part of the ‘Farmer’s Day’ (Chingam-1), the Department of Mathematics hosted an insightful \"Mathematics in Nature\" seminar. The event was aimed at exploring the profound connections between mathematical principles and natural phenomena, highlighting the relevance of mathematics in agricultural practices and environmental understanding. The speaker highlighted various mathematical patterns and geometrical shapes in nature. Discussion on fractals, symmetry, and growth patterns in plants. Application of these concepts to optimize crop growth and yield. Provide an overview of how the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio appear in plant growth, seed arrangements, and animal patterns.
