Overview

Established in 1964 alongside the founding of the Junior College, the Department of Chemistry has grown into one of the most distinguished academic units of St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor. Initially offering Chemistry as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. programmes in Zoology, Physics, and Mathematics, the department expanded with the introduction of the B.Sc. Chemistry programme in 1982 under the leadership of Prof. Jolly Jose and a team of dedicated faculty. Over the years, the department has steadily evolved, achieving a significant milestone with the launch of the M.Sc. Pure Chemistry programme in 2013–14. Today, it functions as a vibrant Postgraduate and Research Department with a committed team of five faculty members and a strong academic legacy. The faculty includes Mrs. Bibi Joseph (HoD), Dr. Arun Thomas, Dr. Bindhu Baby, Dr. Christy Philip, and Mrs. Ami Susan Prasad among which Dr. Arun Thomas, Dr. Bindhu Baby, Dr. Christy Philip serves as research guides.

The department envisions becoming a centre of excellence in chemical sciences, fostering innovation, research, and socially responsible scientific leadership. With the implementation of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in 2024, the department offers a major programme in Chemistry along with minor courses, as well as an add-on course in Advanced Food Safety to enhance students’ professional competencies.

The Postgraduate and Research Department of Chemistry continues to uphold a culture of academic excellence through dedicated teaching, innovative research, and meaningful extension activities. Faculty members actively mentor students, encouraging critical thinking, ethical scientific practice, and lifelong learning. Through seminars, workshops, collaborative initiatives, and community outreach programmes, the department bridges the gap between knowledge and application.
