Overview

The PG & Research Department of Physics at St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, established in 1968, has developed into a centre for advanced study and research. With its elevation to a research department, it strengthens its commitment to excellence in teaching, scientific inquiry, and knowledge generation.

The department is supported by experienced, research-oriented faculty and offers well-equipped laboratories, a computer facility, and an astronomical observatory that supports practical training and observational learning. It regularly organizes international conferences, workshops, seminars, and invited lectures. Notable initiatives such as the International Conference on Innovative Materials (2024), SPECTROMAT – Workshop on Structural & Spectroscopic Tools for Materials Research (2026), outreach programmes like Astromelodic, and hands-on activities such as the Twinkle Lab star-making workshop reflect its active engagement with contemporary, interdisciplinary research and science outreach.

The department maintains strong academic outcomes, with students achieving university ranks and progressing to higher studies and research careers in reputed institutions in India and abroad. Its alumni contribute significantly to academia, research, and industry. The Physics Association enhances the academic environment through activities including the All-Kerala Intercollegiate Physics Quiz in memory of Prof. Celine K. Joseph.

The department also emphasizes holistic development through value-based education and socially responsible initiatives. As a PG & Research Department, it continues to advance through research, collaboration, and academic innovation, contributing to the progress of science and society.
