Overview

The PG & Research Department of Physics at St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, established in 1968, has developed into a centre for advanced study and research. With its elevation to a research department, it strengthens its commitment to excellence in teaching, scientific inquiry, and knowledge generation.

The department is supported by experienced, research-oriented faculty and offers well-equipped laboratories, a computer facility, and an astronomical observatory that supports practical training and observational learning. It regularly organizes international conferences, workshops, seminars, and invited lectures. Notable initiatives such as the International Conference on Innovative Materials (2024), SPECTROMAT – Workshop on Structural & Spectroscopic Tools for Materials Research (2026), outreach programmes like Astromelodic, and hands-on activities such as the Twinkle Lab star-making workshop reflect its active engagement with contemporary, interdisciplinary research and science outreach.

The department maintains strong academic outcomes, with students achieving university ranks and progressing to higher studies and research careers in reputed institutions in India and abroad. Its alumni contribute significantly to academia, research, and industry. The Physics Association enhances the academic environment through activities including the All-Kerala Intercollegiate Physics Quiz in memory of Prof. Celine K. Joseph.

The department also emphasizes holistic development through value-based education and socially responsible initiatives. As a PG & Research Department, it continues to advance through research, collaboration, and academic innovation, contributing to the progress of science and society.

Recognition of Physics Department as Research Centre

The Postgraduate Department of Physics, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, has been officially recognized as a Research Centre by Mahatma Gandhi University following Syndicate approval. As part of this recognition, Dr. Thomas Mathew and Dr. Adon Jose have been approved as Research Guides. This milestone marks a significant step in strengthening the department’s research capabilities and academic excellence.

Research Publication by Devi Priya A K (MSc Physics) in NEXT Materials (SCOPUS Indexed Journal)

Ms. Devi Priya A K (M.Sc. Physics, 2023–25) published a research article in the journal NEXT Materials (2026) as part of her postgraduate project under the guidance of Dr. Adon Jose.

Appointment as Chairperson, Board of Studies (Physics PG), MG University

Dr. Thomas Mathew, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, was appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Studies for the Physics PG discipline at Mahatma Gandhi University. This prestigious recognition reflects his academic leadership and valuable contributions to higher education.

Research Publication by Kavya Manu (M.Sc. Physics) in Inorganic Chemistry Communications (SCOPUS INDEXED JOURNAL)

Ms. Kavya Manu, an M.Sc. Physics student (2023–25), successfully published her research work in Inorganic Chemistry Communications as part of her postgraduate project under the guidance of Dr. Adon Jose. This achievement highlights the department’s active engagement in student-led research and academic excellence.

Materialia Outstanding Reviewer

Dr. Adon Jose was recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer (2024) by the journal Materialia for his significant contributions to the peer-review process. This honor reflects his commitment to academic excellence and his valuable role in advancing quality research in the field.

Student-Led Startup Technopath by M.Sc. Physics Students

The launch of Technopath marks a significant achievement of the Department of Physics, driven entirely by M.Sc. Physics students. Led by Joyal Sunny (Founder & CTO), along with Sidharth T P (Technical Associate & Operations Manager), Alias Benny (Marketing & Business Development Executive), and Jesna K Sebastian (Customer Relations & Service Coordinator), the initiative stands out as a registered startup on the Government of India’s Udyam portal.

Research Publication by Sone T Sunny (M.Sc. Physics) in Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics (SCOPUS INDEXED JOURNAL)

Ms. Sone T Sunny, an M.Sc. Physics student (2023–25), published a research article in the Journal of Materials Science Materials in Electronics as part of her postgraduate project under the guidance of Dr. Adon Jose. This accomplishment highlights the department’s strong emphasis on research-driven learning and student academic achievement.

Diya Ann Jose Secures A Grade at MG University Kalolsavam

Ms. Diya Ann Jose, II B.Sc. Hons Physics student, achieved A Grade in both English Elocution and English Poetry Recitation at the MG University Kalolsavam 2025–26. She also secured A Grade in English Debate along with Ms. Feba Manu Pappanal, marking a commendable accomplishment in literary and cultural competitions.
