The Malayalam department of our College was established in 1964, which the College itself was established. Malayalam language and literature is taught here as a second language. Rev. Sr. Helen SVM was the first Lecturer for Malayalam language and literature. She served the institution for three years, after which she was transferred to B.C.M. College, Kottayam, on 15-03-1967. The following are the eminent teachers who have worked in the department.
In June 1967, Sri B. J. Antony joined the Malayalam department as a Lecturer. For a long period of twenty-eight years, he was in the College as a Professor and the Head of the Department [H.O.D.]. Sri T. J. Mathai was appointed as a Lecturer in July 1967 and worked here for a short time. In August 1967, Sri Joseph Kunnacherry was appointed as a Lecturer in the department, and he worked here for a year. He was a well-known novelist in Malayalam and published 30 novels. In July 1968, Sr. Rosalia SVM was appointed as Lecturer in the department. She worked as a Lecturer in the B.C.M. college and was also a well-known poet and writer. She served the institution for two years, after which she retired from service on 21-03-1970. Sri P. J. Mathew joined the department of Malayalam as a Lecturer in July 1970. From 1995 he had been serving as the H.O.D., and he retired in March 2002. He is a writer and a well-known orator. He published two novels in Malayalam Samagamakoodaram and A Night in Oakpark - and many articles in periodicals. Sri M. K. Chacko joined the department in 1980, and for nine years, he served the department. Sri Babu Thomas joined the department in 1981. He was the former H.O.D. [2002-2010] and worked as the H.O.D. of Malayalam department in B.C.M. College, Kottayam. The Late Smt. Somi Jacob joined the department in 1982. After 31 years of dedicated service, she retired as the H.O.D. on 31-03-2012. Dr Sr. Deepa joined the department in 1988. She was the H.O.D. since 1-04-2012. She retired in 2015. Sr. Soumya was appointed in June 1993. She was relieved in 1995 to join St. Pius X College, Rajapuram. Smt. Blessy P. James joined the department in 2013. She is the current H.O.D.
As to our important departmental activities, the Malayala Samajam is very popular in our College. It is an assemblage of students and teachers with aesthetic sense. It is an association of students and teachers who love nature and literature. Malayala Samajam also publishes a manuscript magazine. As Dr (Sr). Deepa has a PhD in Folklore, a Folklore Club was established in our College for promoting folk arts under the guidance of the Kerala Folklore Academy. Teachers and students are members of this academy. Several arts and cultural programmes are conducted as part of this club.
Sr. Helen was a sincere and dedicated teacher. She had served the College for three years.
