Department of Malayalam
The Malayalam Department of our college was established alongside the college in 1964. Malayalam language and literature is taught here as a second language. Rev. Sr. Helen SVM was the first lecturer of Malayalam language and literature, serving the institution for 3 years. Sri. B. J. Antony served in the college for twenty eight years acting as the HOD. Sri T. J. Mathai worked as a lecturer here for a short time. Sri Joseph Kunnacherry, the eminent and well-known novelist, worked in the department for a year. Poetess and writer Sr.Rosalia SVM also worked as a lecturer for two years after which she retired from service. Writer and well known speaker Sri P. J. Mathew worked in the department from 1970 to 2002. He published two novels in Malayalam – Samagama Koodaram, A Night in Oakpark – and many articles in periodicals. Sri M. K. Chacko served the department for 9 years. Sri. Babu Thomas worked as the HOD from 2002-2010. Smt. Somi Jacob, after 31 years of service, retired as HOD. Dr. Sr. Deepa retired as HOD in 2015. Sr. Soumya worked in the department from 1993-1995. Smt. Blessy P. James joined the department in 2013.
As part of our important Departmental activities, the Malayala Samajam is very popular in our college. It is an assemblage of students and teachers with aesthetic sense who love nature and literature. Malayala Samajam publishes a manuscript magazine too. Dr. Sr. Deepa took Ph.d. in Folklore and a Folklore Club was established in our college for promoting folk arts with the guidance of the Kerala Folklore Academy. The teachers and students are members of this academy. Through this club, we give training for ‘Margamkali’ and other arts. A National Seminar had been conducted along with a tribal performance too. Several Arts and Cultural Programmes are conducted as part of this club.
Department of Hindi
The Department of Hindi was established in 1964. Rev Sr. James was the HOD of the department in 1964.
For degree courses Hindi is being taught as an additional language. Students are at liberty to take either Hindi or Malayalam as the optional subject for their additional language. A post admission test for S1 classes is conducted to find out the academic standing of the students. The weaker students are identified and given necessary guidance. Every year on September 14 Hindi Day is being elaborately observed to instill the importance of the role played by Hindi language. Former faculty members of the Hindi Dept are: Late Rev. Sr James and Late Dr. Sindhu K C. Prof. Sr. James scholarship and Dr. Sindhu K C Memorial Cash Award are given to the Hindi students every year. (Best students in Hindi for II DC Hindi examination and top scorer in Hindi in UG programme respectively). At present Dr. Merly K Punnose (HOD) is serving in the department.
