CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT (CEERD)

The CEERD is an organisation established in 2001 to undertake studies related to the development problems of Uzhavoor Panchayat and neighbouring areas and to identify the potential resources available in the area for sustainable development. It is also aimed at linking the college with the local community in a mutually beneficial manner. Programmes are formulated by linking together all educational institutions in the area, the local administration, all governmental bodies, voluntary organisations, banks and the people of Uzhavoor Panchayat. All departments in the college conduct CEERD programmes, utilising the expertise of its faculty members.  In this way the organisation seeks to make teaching and learning related to social needs. Paristhithi Mithra Award given by CEERD, sponsored by Prof. V.P. Thomaskutty (Former Principal and Chairman of CEERD) and Prof. P.J. Joy (First Excicutive Director of CEERD) 

Paristhithi Mithra Award

Centre for Environmental Education and rural Development (CEERD) was established in St.Stephen’s College Uzhavoor in 2001 to promote extension programmes of the college for the all round development of the region.

Paristhithi Mithra is an award instituted by the CEERD, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor in the year 2009. The award is given in recognition of the outstanding contribution of individuals, governmental or nongovernmental organizations and educational institutions towards the promotion of environmental protection, conservation and preservation in the State of Kerala. The award would be presented every year on the World Environment Day.

The award consists of a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 10000/- sponsored by Prof. V.P. Thomaskutty the former Principal and founder Chairman of CEERD and Prof. P.J. Joy the founder Executive Director of CEERD.

Selection Process

Applications for the award of Paristhithi Mithra shall reach the office of the Executive Director, CEERD, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor on or before 30th March of every year along with a detailed report of the environmental activities undertaken by the organization during the previous calendar year. The report shall invariably be substantiated with evidences like news paper cuttings, CDs, photographs etc. and an undertaking by the head of the organization. The report and supportive evidences shall be submitted in triplicate.

The winner will be adjudicated by a panel of environmental experts whose decision will be final.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC) 

Membership in NCC is voluntary and selective. NCC training will foster ''esprit de-corps'' among the cadets and instill in them a sense of discipline and selfless service for the defence of the country.

4% grace mark is awarded in the qualifying examination  by M.G. University to the cadets who represent Kerala State in TSC, ALC and Annual National Cadet Corps games. Again, a grace mark of 5% is awarded for cadets who attend the Republic Parade and 3% and 2% grace marks are awarded for the certificate holders of ''C'' certificate and ''B'' certificate respectively. All NCC cadets are also eligible for Bonus/Weightage marks during admissions to PG Courses. (5 marks for cadets and 10 marks for `B'' & `C'' certificate holders.)

15% seats are reserved for NCC `C'' certificate holders with `B''grading in Army Commissioned Officer''s selection. Preference is given to NCC Cadets in the selection to paramilitary forces also. Grace marks will be provided to candidates who possesses NCC ''B & C'' certificates in the selection of uniformed forces such as Police, Excise, Fireforce, Forest Dept. by Kerala Government  

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

Membership in NSS is voluntary but is strictly  selective. There are two units of 100 members each. Application for enrolment will be called by the programme officers of the units at the beginning of each academic year.Membership in NSS and certificate to that effect from the university will be treated as additional qualification while making recruitments to public services.

A weightage of 5 marks is given to all N.S.S. Volunteers when seeking admission to P.G. Courses.5% grace mark will be awarded for attending Republic day Camp, 3% for attending National Camp and 2% for all the N.S.S. certificate holders.

Catholic Students Movement is an organization of catholic university students in the state level and a unit of it is functioning here too. Various programmes such as camps, seminars,  spiritual retreats etc. are organised under the auspices of CSM with a view to develop individual and social awareness and to promote faith in God in the members and thus make them effective tools for social change. All catholic students are supposed to be members of CSM. 

WOMEN''S CELL

Women''s Cell has been functioning in the college since 1996. The cell aims at the intellectual and social uplift of girl students in the College, under the able guidance of  a team of teachers. The cell conducts various programs on regular basis. The different programs undertaken by Women Cell include

COUNSELLING CENTRE

With a view to give professional help to students who are passing through emotional tensions, psychological and study related problems, a counselling centre has been functioning in the college since 2005.  The centre is headed by a trained and experienced teacher.  It is a place where a student can feel comfortable to share and seek non-critical support. 

RED RIBBON CLUB

The Red Ribbon Club started functioning from 2013-14 academic year onwards. The club organise various programs like promoting voluntary blood donation, positive speaking, awareness on HIV etc in association with Kerala State AIDS Control Society.
